Accelerated Resolution Therapy

# Changing how a memory is stored.

ART is a structured, evidence-informed approach to trauma treatment. Here is what it actually involves, what it does not involve, and how to tell whether it might suit you.

![Sea fog lifting off a still bay](/assets/band-horizon-BxYD9Gxs.jpg)

A single ART session works on one memory at a time.

## What ART Actually Is

Accelerated Resolution Therapy is a form of trauma treatment that uses smooth, repeated eye movements while you hold a distressing memory in mind. The work targets how that memory is stored, reducing the emotional and physical charge attached to it, and giving you the option to replace the distressing imagery with imagery you choose.

The facts do not change and you do not lose the memory. What changes is how much of your present it gets to occupy: how often it arrives uninvited, and how much of your body it takes with it when it does.

What a session is like

01

### We agree on the target

You decide what we work on. We identify a specific memory, image or reaction rather than working on everything at once.

02

### We work with it

You follow a simple repeated eye movement while holding the material in mind. I guide the process and check in continuously. You stay awake, aware and in control throughout, and you can stop at any point.

03

### We check what has shifted

We test the target again to see what the charge is now. Sessions are typically sixty minutes; intensives run longer for more concentrated work.

ART does not require you to repeatedly recount every detail out loud. For many people who have stalled in talk therapy, that is the reason they are willing to try it at all.

## Answers to Common Questions

Is it hypnosis?

No. You are fully awake and aware for the entire session. You remain in control, and you can stop whenever you want.

Will I lose control?

No. You choose the target, you set the pace, and nothing happens without your agreement. People who have felt overpowered by past experiences often need to hear that twice, which is fine.

Do I have to relive everything?

The approach is designed to reduce emotional intensity without requiring you to repeatedly describe every detail aloud. What you share is your decision.

Does it work over video?

Yes. This is a telehealth practice and ART is delivered by secure video. I will explain exactly how the eye movement component works on screen during your consultation.

## What I Will Not Tell You

I will not tell you that ART works for everyone, because it does not. I will not tell you how many sessions you will need, because I cannot know that before we start and anyone who gives you a number is guessing.

ART does not remove the memory, and it does not undo what happened. It can change how the memory is experienced so it no longer produces the same level of distressing emotional and physical reactions. It is not the right starting point when stabilization is the more pressing need, and it is not a substitute for emergency care. If I do not think it fits your situation, I will say so at the consultation rather than after you have paid for a session.
