What I Treat

# Emotion Regulation for Adults

When the reaction arrives before you do, and the rest of the evening goes to reviewing it.

## Faster and Bigger Than the Moment Warrants

Someone uses a particular tone and you are flooded before the sentence ends. One line of feedback in a review, and the other nine paragraphs vanish. Your teenager slams a cabinet and you are shouting in a voice you do not recognize as yours.

Or the reverse. You go flat and far away mid-conversation, and the person across from you is still talking to someone who left the room. Shutting down looks calmer from the outside. It costs the same.

Then comes the part people actually come in for: the hours afterward. The replay. The apology text drafted four times. The private verdict that there is something wrong with you, when everyone else seems to manage the same moment with a shrug.

## Why Insight Alone Has Not Changed It

You can probably already explain the pattern. You may be able to name the house it came from. That understanding is a thinking task and it runs at thinking speed. The reaction is happening lower and quicker, on a cue that resembles something older: a raised voice, a door, a certain silence.

ART works at that level. We trace the reaction back to the scenes that trained it and work with those images while I guide the eye movements. As the material settles, the cue tends to arrive with less force, and that gap is where a choice becomes possible. You are not broken and this is not a character flaw. It is a setting that was installed for a reason.

## What a Session on This Involves

We take one recent moment you would handle differently, described in detail: what was said, what your body did first, and how long it took to come back down. Then we follow it backward to the earliest version of the same feeling.

You hold what surfaces while I guide the eye movements. Afterward we run the same scenario again in imagination to see what is left and where the reaction now starts, if it starts at all.

Sessions are 60 minutes by secure video. This one pairs well with [an ART intensive](/art-intensives), because the pattern usually has several scenes feeding it and a longer block covers more ground at once.

## What This Is Not, and When It Is Not the Fit

- Not anger management for a court order, a custody matter or an employer requirement, and I do not provide completion letters.
- Not couples or family therapy, even though the pattern usually shows up most at home.
- Not a set of coping skills handed to you in week one, and never a promised number of sessions.
- Not the right fit while there is violence in the home. Safety and the right level of care come first.
- Adults only, by secure video in Kentucky and Ohio.

This is not a crisis service.

If you are in crisis, please call or text 988, call 911, or go to your nearest emergency room. ART is not appropriate during active psychosis or acute crisis. Individual outcomes vary.

## Bring one recent moment to a free fifteen-minute consultation.

One example is enough for me to describe how I would work with it. Fifteen minutes, video or phone, no charge. I am not going to grade the moment or tell you how you should have handled it.
