Anxiety With a History Behind It

Not every anxious person needs trauma work. This page is for the ones whose anxiety started somewhere, and who can feel that it did.

The Difference Between Worry and This

Generalized worry moves around. It lands on money, then the kids, then a work email, and it responds reasonably well to the standard tools: sleep, exercise, structure, challenging the thought.

What I am describing here behaves differently. It has a floor under it. Your chest tightens before you have identified a reason. Certain rooms, certain tones of voice, a particular time of year, and your body is already at attention. You have done the breathing exercise correctly and watched the alarm come back twenty minutes later, because the tool is managing an output rather than reaching what produces it.

Often there was a stretch of life when staying alert was the sensible response. A household where you tracked a mood to stay ahead of it. A job where a mistake had consequences. A period of illness. The alertness made sense then. It did not get switched off when the conditions changed.

Why This Kind of Anxiety Responds to ART

When we go looking, there are usually specific scenes attached, and people are often surprised by which ones surface. Not the obvious headline event but a kitchen at a particular hour, a hallway, a phone call.

ART works on those scenes and on the sensation itself, the tightening or the buzz, while I guide the eye movements. When the underlying material settles, the daily bracing often eases rather than needing to be managed hour by hour with technique.

What a Session on Anxiety Involves

We begin somewhere physical: where it lives, what it feels like, when in the day it arrives, and how far back you can trace that same sensation. From there we choose targets, which may be an image, a body sensation or a recurring scenario like the Sunday evening dread.

You hold the target while I guide the eye movements, and we check the sensation again afterward so the change is something you can feel rather than something I tell you about.

Sessions are 60 minutes by secure video. You will leave with something specific to notice during the week, usually one situation to observe, not a workbook.

What This Is Not, and When It Is Not the Fit

  • Not medication management or psychiatric prescribing.
  • Not a claim that anxiety disappears, and never a promised number of sessions.
  • Not the right fit if what you need now is stabilization or a higher level of care.
  • Not a substitute for a medical workup when the physical symptoms have not been looked at yet. Get the thyroid and the heart checked.
  • Adults only, by secure video in Kentucky and Ohio.

This is not a crisis service.

If you are in crisis, please call or text 988, call 911, or go to your nearest emergency room. ART is not appropriate during active psychosis or acute crisis. Individual outcomes vary.

Fifteen free minutes to work out whether this is your kind of anxiety.

That is genuinely the question the consultation answers. You describe how it behaves, I tell you whether I think there is history under it and what I would do about it. If a different approach fits better, I will say so.
