Phobia Treatment in Louisville, KY
For adults whose lives have quietly rearranged themselves around one specific fear. Worked on directly, by secure video.
The Specific Fears People Bring
Flying, and the wedding in another state you sent a gift to instead. Needles, which means no bloodwork for six years. Bridges, which in a river city is not a small inconvenience, because the Kennedy and the Sherman Minton are how most people get to work. Elevators, in a downtown full of tall buildings. Dogs, after one afternoon at nine years old. Vomiting, which reorganizes eating, travel and parenting. Heights, storms, tunnels, enclosed spaces.
The thing about a phobia is that you already know it is out of proportion. Being told so is not new information and it has never once helped. The fear is not running on logic, so argument does not reach it.
What actually costs you is the accommodation. The route that adds twenty minutes each way. The job you did not apply for because it involved a plane twice a quarter. The procedure your doctor keeps mentioning. Most people underestimate the total until they list it out.
Working on It Without Months of Homework
A lot of phobia treatment is a ladder: you rank feared situations and you climb, week by week, with assignments in between. It has a real track record and some people do well with it. Others quit, because the homework is the part they were avoiding in the first place.
ART approaches it from the image and the body rather than the ladder. We find the scene the fear lives in, sometimes the original event and sometimes the imagined worst-case that plays before you go, and we work on it in session using eye movements. Often there is no first event to find, and that is fine. We work with the picture that shows up.
Nothing gets erased and nothing is promised. What people report is that the picture stops arriving with the same charge attached, which changes what they are willing to do.
Video Only, Which Suits This Work
I have no Louisville office and see no one in person. Sessions happen by secure video while you are physically in Kentucky or Ohio. For phobia work that is not a compromise: you are in a familiar room rather than an unfamiliar building, which is usually where people can do this most easily.
You need a private space, a steady screen and about an hour. Adults only, private pay.
This is not a crisis service.
If you are in crisis, please call or text 988, call 911, or go to your nearest emergency room. ART is not appropriate during active psychosis or acute crisis. Individual outcomes vary.
Also in Louisville
Everything here is by secure video, so where you are in Louisville makes no difference to the work. These are the other things I am most often asked about locally.
Name the fear on a fifteen-minute call.
Tell me what you are avoiding and what you would do if it were not in the way. I will tell you honestly whether this is a reasonable fit.
